VISION

At Ernehale Flying High Academies, we believe in a holistic approach to the teaching of English. Our vision is to provide children with opportunities to develop their passion and skillset for reading, writing and oracy in a cohesive way. Our English curriculum is carefully planned, so that children become confident and creative communicators who will be able to use these skills effectively in their future endeavours.

In writing, we aim to inspire and motivate children through high-quality texts and WAGOLLs. These give a rich and varied literary heritage which enables all children to access a variety of genres and produce a range of high-quality outcomes. By providing our children with the literary toolkit they need to succeed, we strive for them to become fluent and imaginative writers who can write effectively in a range of contexts and for a range of purposes.

We want to produce confident writers who are not afraid to take risks and are able to transfer taught skills in a variety of contexts. The children will be intrinsically motivated by a clear purpose for their writing. They will be reflective writers, assessing their own and others writing. They will understand the purpose of their writing and the impact that their word choice and style have on the reader.

INTENT

We believe that writing is one of the most impactful and fundamental skills that children will have and need throughout their education and in life; therefore, we ensure it is taught to the highest of standards and taught consistently to ensure progression is made for all children. Our vision is that every pupil will learn to write effectively regardless of their background, needs or abilities, and that every pupil will be inspired to become life-long writers.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Ernehale Flying High Academies, our vision for writing is embedded through our English lessons and across our wider curriculum. In English, writing is centred around a quality text that children are immersed in from the start of their learning journey: this enables all children to be exposed to a rich vocabulary that they can use in their writing and across the curriculum to make links. Writing in a variety of genres, children are taken on writing journeys which build their knowledge of writing for context and purpose. After the immersion of the text, children analyse a quality example; they then learn the skills they have identified, before planning their own version. Once the writing has taken place, the children have the opportunity to edit and revise their work, before publishing a final version. Within the learning journey, opportunities for reflection are woven throughout.

Writing is an integral part of our curriculum. All children from Foundation Stage to Year 6 are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum. It is our intention that pupils develop a clear understanding of the writing process in order to establish themselves as an author in their own right. Through our English writing teaching sequence, we foster pupils' interest in writing and offer a reason and context for writing which enables the children to write for purpose and audience. In order to establish this, pupils will develop their knowledge of genre features, audience, language and effective composition. This is reflected in their learning environment, whereby the working walls reflect their learning journey and visuals to support this.
